Well done! (Used to work at the Citizenship Office and the more bits of documentation you have the easier it is to get around) Presumably he is a New Zealand Citizen by Descent, born in the UK. If he is eligible for UK citizenship you should get him that passport too, before he turns 18 or leaves the country and voids his residence.
ReplyDeleteWe've discussed that, but right now the French passport is probably of more use and I'm not sure you can have triple citizenship?
DeleteYou can have multiples unless there is a rule you must renounce previous citizenships - Thailand I think, Turkey perhaps, but not NZ, UK or France. French is the most useful because of the EU. He is automatically French and NZ by descent, (if born in the UK) but his children will not be either (unless born in NZ or France) - only citizenship by birth can be transmitted to children. He can get English citizenship easily before turning 18, afterwards he has to do the whole permanent residence/settlement paperwork thing, it's less of a pfaff to get it finished soon even if he never uses it, it is bound to get less easy to obtain (all countries are making it more onerous to become citizens and to have legal rights) and it will mean he can always return to Blighty even if they persist with future Brexit adventures, when Wales and Cornwall secede to the EU.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it will give him the world's sexiest accent.
