Buster Keaton Forever

  1. Watching STEAMBOAT BILL JR. for the first time was a revelation. Keaton could take two people, stand them 3 feet apart, make them somehow manage to NOT SEE EACH OTHER, and have it be hilarious for 30 seconds. Genius.

  3. I have been unable to get your idea of Laurel and Hardy in Waiting For Godot out of my head (a dramatic earworm) and I don't like the casting (which is even in Wikipedia). I think Stan could play Lucky and Ollie would be a good fit for Pozzo, but I'd like to see Keaton as Estragon and Chaplin as Vladimir. Such a brilliant play, even Steve Martin and Robin WIlliams could do it.

    1. Lately I've been thinking Stan and Ollie in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead would be an even better fit. My wife saw Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson doing Godot before we met; I'm still jealous.

  4. Faamous people do add a frisson to any dramatic role; the joy of a reader knowing or recognising something that is being brought from outside the part; but the power of Godot is it doesn't matter who's in it; we're still waiting. Have you seen Buster in Beckett's Film (1965 - recently restored)? Old, crumpled, stone face - that's my Gogo.

    1. It's not just that they were famous, it's the specific stage personas they had and the existing relationship they brought to the role. That plus the relationship in the text created a new, third thing. That's the magic, I think.

  5. Also, Stan and Ollie in Rosenkrantz + Guildenstern? Genius! With Groucho as the King (although Dave Sim has kind of appropriated Groucho) and Harpo as Hamlet!
